How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2007 Cadillac SRX
Today on our 2007 Cadillac SRX, we will be installing the Curt Tail Light Hardware Kit for 4 pole ends part number 56146KIT. First step of our install will be locating the manufacturer's wiring that runs to the back of the tail lights. We get underneath the vehicle and look above the tail pipe or muffler, we can see the wiring that will run through the back light of the tail lights. To make it easier to access the wire, we are going to go ahead and remove the two rear exhaust hangers and use a safety strap to move the muffler over to give us a little more working room. Next, we'll use a utility knife to go ahead and cut back the protective cover around the wire and remove a section so that we can get to the wiring. Now, with our wires exposed, we'll go ahead and use our test light to probe the wire and run this signal for the rear tail lights so we know which color will operate which signal. For this application, the purple wire will be our running lights and the yellow wire with a light brown tracer will be both the left hand turn signal and braking. Now, to connect the converter box wiring to our tail lights, we use quick splice connectors provided with our install kit.
We'll take the quick splice connector, feed it over the running light circuit - purple wire, and then bring the converter box, which will be our brown wire and slide it into the quick splice connector and grip it down. Then we'll go ahead and close the clasp. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process with our yellow wire. With those two wires secured, we'll go ahead and take the green wire and route it over to the passenger side repeating the same process. When routing your wires, be mindful to stay away from moving components such as steering or suspension or excessive heat such as exhaust. Now that we've got the green wire over on the passenger side, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process of removing the particular cover and pulling out the necessary wire that we need to connect to.
For this application, it will be the green wire. We'll slide the quick splice connector over the green wire and then we can go ahead and cut off some of the excess length from the green wire coming from our converter box, slide it into the blue connector and grip it down. Now we'll go ahead and use some black electrical tape to wrap up our connection to assist in keeping out any dust, dirt, debris or moisture. With that completed, we can go ahead and re-install anything we removed here on the passenger's side. Back on the driver's side we still have two wires that will need to be connected. This will be the white wire with the pre-attached ring terminal which is the manufacturer's ground from our converter box.
Note, for this application we will not be using the red wire from the converter box, it will get grounded. It will be used with a different set up where the turn and brake signal circuits are separate systems. We'll go ahead and take our red wire, strip it back and add a ring terminal and ground it with the white wire using a self tapping screw. It is recommended to go directly to the frame which we can do here, then we can reinstall the exhaust that we removed here on the driver's side and any wiring that we loosen to gain access. With that done, we'll go ahead and take a couple of black zip ties and secure the wiring then cut off the excess from the zip ties. Next, we'll take the black wire coming from our converter box which will be our power wire. We'll take the extra length of wire provided with our install kit, strip back both ends and use the yellow bar connector to secure them together, then we'll go ahead and wrap it up with some black electrical tape to help protect this connection point.
Next, we'll find a suitable spot for our modular 00:04:23 box. Once we locate this area, we'll clean it off and attach the box. To attach the box, we'll pull back the two way adhesive and firmly adhere it into position. Now we are ready to go ahead and start routing our black power wire up to the engine compartment over to the battery and it can also be helpful to use a pole wire which can be a stiff piece of wire, in this case a piece of air tubings to assist in routing your wire. Once again, keep in mind when routing your wires, stay away from moving components such as steering or suspension or excessive heat such as exhaust. As we route the wire, we'll use black zip ties to secure it as we go. Now we've got our wires routed to the engine compartment, we'll go ahead and pull it to the top and secure it, then we'll route it across the engine bay, following the manufacturer's wiring over to the alternate positive battery post. Here we can go ahead and remove the cover and then cut off any excess from the wire. Now we can go ahead and add the fuse holder.Fuse holders provided with our install kit will strip back both our power wire and the fuse holder and use the black connector to secure the two together. Then on the other end of our fuse holder, we'll strip it back and add a ring terminal. Now, we'll go ahead and remove the nut or stud and install the ring terminal. For this application we are going to go ahead and clip the ring terminal so that we can slide it under the nut, over the stud and then resecure it with the nut and install the fuse into the fuse holder. Once we install the fuse holder cap, we'll go ahead and use a couple of zip ties to finish securing our wire and then we can cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. Now we can go ahead and close the cover on the positive battery terminal and that will complete the install of the Curt Tail Light Hardware Kit - 4 Pole End, part number 56146KIT on our 2007 Cadillac SRX. .
